It is a strong oxidator and reacts with flammable compounds and reductors. It is a chlorine compound often used as a disinfectant or a bleaching agent. It is generally used dissolved in water at various concentrations. It is a white solid that readily decomposes in water releasing oxygen and chlorine. It also has a strong chlorine odor.
